Presenting the Class of 2018 Texas Leadership Salute Candidates
About the Program
The Texas Leadership Salute began in 1984 in Denton, Texas by Denton Photographer Don Barnes. Don and his wife Dee owned and managed the Denton studio known as The Photographers. The program began under the name The Denton Council on Youth Leadership. They began the program .as a way to showcase the leadership demonstrated by area high school seniors in the Denton, Texas area. Today, while the name has changed and it has grown to include area high schools from Collin, Denton, and Tarrant Counties, the mission has remained the same.
"The mission of The Texas Leadership Salute is to celebrate and showcase our high school leaders in the North Texas area with their families, educators, peers, and others who may not know them in our community. The program aims to recognize one or more outstanding students with a scholarship and their completed portrait montage as a tangible acknowledgement of their high school leadership and academic achievements."
Yvonne Estes Photography, LLC has voluntarily accepted to chair the program and provide the photography services needed to see it to completion for the Class of 2018. This year I am excited to be able to showcase 98 high school senior nominees from the Class of 2018. The selection process began in February 2017. Local high school administrators and counselors were contacted and asked to nominate students that are proven leaders and high academic achievers in their school. I received about 280 nominations, and 120 students qualified to participate in the program for the 2017-2018 school year. Nominees were asked to complete a detailed biography highlighting their achievements. Of the 120 that qualified, 98 completed the full application and participated in the complimentary portrait session. I volunteered my time and photography services to produce the portrait displays that showcased each student. Next, I had a group local leaders review each student's detailed biography and essay, They rated the students using specific grading criteria listed in a rubric. The rubric rated students on academics, leadership, honors, and their essay. Winners were selected and they were showcased in March at Music City Mall in Lewisvill.e. Today, they are being showcased at their respective high schools. The nominees represent one of the following area high schools:
Argyle High School - Argyle ISD Billy Ryan High School - Denton ISD Denton High School - Denton ISD Flower Mound High School - Lewisville ISD John H Guyer High School - Denton ISD Krum High School - Krum ISD Lake Dallas High School - Lake Dallas ISD Lewisville High School - Lewisville ISD Marcus High School - Lewisville ISD North Crowley High School - Crowley ISD Ponder High School - Ponder ISD Rick Reedy High School - Frisco ISD
The time and cost of maintaining this program varies from year to year. Currently, I use personal income, proceeds from the sales of photo products purchased by participants, and from donations by local businesses and individuals. All students who did not win their display are offered the opportunity to purchase their display or other photo products at a reduced rate. Families showing financial need may be able to receive more discounts if funds are available. This year I would like to thank the following individuals and businesses for their financial support. Their support has allowed me to offer scholarships and discounts to the winners and nominees this year.
